What Are Self-Limiting Beliefs?

Self-limiting beliefs are belief systems that we carry in our thoughts and are also delved deep within our subconscious mind. These beliefs are usually negative and prevent us from taking action, hinder us from achieving success, and inhibit us from working at our fullest potential.

Examples of common self-limiting beliefs:

  • It is too late for me to start working on my dreams.
  • I don’t have what it takes to be successful.
  • I will never earn enough money to live the life that I truly desire.

The fact of the matter is that when you look at these limiting beliefs in more detail, none of them is actually true.
Limiting beliefs are often manifested from failures from the past, which leads to having subconscious doubt. When we subconsciously hold onto our fears and failures, it has an effect on our decision making, and will have a detrimental effect on practically everything that we do in our lives.

The Sub Conscious Mind

The subconscious mind can be defined as the thoughts that you have without using conscious thinking.
For example:
When you learn to drive a car, you have to make a very conscious effort to think about manoeuvring the vehicle. You have to remind yourself to look into the mirror, use the brakes, clutch, and indicators. After a few months, you are driving without thinking and are able to react to any given situation that can happen whilst you are travelling on the road.
The same principles apply to self-limiting beliefs. Your mind is subconsciously telling you that you cannot do something or has automatically adopted a negative perception about a situation or opportunity. Once you become aware of your subconscious negative thought patterns, this is the first step to combating your self-limiting beliefs.

How to Overcome Your Self-Limiting Beliefs?

Here are some steps that you can take to overcome your self- limiting beliefs, and to start programming your mind into thinking that you can achieve anything that you want.

  1. Identify Your Self-Limiting Beliefs

The first step is to be totally honest with yourself. What self-limiting beliefs you have? Take a piece of paper and write down all of your self-limiting beliefs that you know are hindering you from taking action.

  1. Ask Yourself The Question “Is It True?”

After you have listed your self-limiting beliefs, ask yourself the question. Is it true? Then ask yourself the question again, “Is it really true?”. I am sure that the answer is no! Then start writing down the actions that can be taken that will help you to overcome your barriers.
The founder of KFC Colonel Sanders did not have the self- limiting belief that it was too late for him to go into business. He was 62 years old when he franchised the infamous KFC brand!

  1. Use Visualisation And Affirmations To Combat Your Self – Limiting Beliefs

It is proven that positive affirmations can help to combat self-limiting beliefs.
For example: If your self-limiting belief is that you cannot afford to go on holiday. Put an image of your chosen holiday destination as the screensaver of your mobile phone. This will help you to visualise your holiday and will help to embed this into your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between fantasy and reality. If you start programming your mind into believing that you can achieve something, your conscious mind will start thinking of ways to ensure that you achieve this.
Verbal affirmations are also a good method of combating self-limiting beliefs. For example: If you said to yourself every morning. “I am an online entrepreneur” I can guarantee that you will have a successful business up and running within 12 months.
