According to recent research, less than 3 percent of the population write down their goals, and less than 1 percent actually review and rewrite their goals on a regular basis.  Yet there are many books based on goal setting and why we should do this. Here are some good reasons why you should set goals when starting an online business.

Have you ever been on a journey to somewhere that you have never been to before? You have no idea where you are going, or how long it will take you to get there. You also have no idea how much it will cost you to get there. The same applies to start an online business without setting any goals.
For example. Before you start your business, you can set goals on low long it will take you to get it off the ground, and how much you would like your business to be earning within the first 12 months.

Goals Can Focus Your Attention and Help You To Stay On Track

I am sure in the past that you have started a project with good intentions, but somehow you either did not complete it or did not go as planned. This is why setting goals will help you to focus, and to stay on track.
For example. Your goal is to set up an online business selling eBooks within 12 months, but your friend has introduced you to a friend that sells weight loss products because they think that it is a better idea. You will be more likely to refrain from your friends advise to start an online weight loss website and stick to your plan of selling eBooks online if you have defined your goals. When you write down your goals, it’s like having a map to guide you on your journey.
Having set goals will also help when there are moments when you are encountering problems when you are trying to move your business idea forward. The more detail that you can add when writing down your goals, the better as this will help you to solve problems at a later date.

Goals Help You To Measure Your Progress

When you write down specific goals, it will enable you to measure how much progress you have made.
For example, you have set yourself a goal to gain 10,000 subscribers in 12 months. After 6 months you already have 7,000 subscribers which indicate that you are ahead of your goal setting schedule. It may also be an indication that you are not making as much progress as you had initially planned. This would be a good time to reflect on what you have been doing in the past, and what you could do in the future to get your plan back on schedule.

Goals Hold You Accountable

Writing downs your goals in detail is a great technique for making you more committed and can hold you accountable if you don’t set out to achieve them. If you set goals and do not make the effort to achieve them, the only person you are letting down is yourself. You are the person that is jeopardizing yourself from gaining financial freedom, and the only that you can blame is yourself. This is why it is important that when you set goals, you keep track of whether you are achieving them.

Goals Help You To Set Priorities

Having your goals written down will help you to prioritise your tasks at hand. You may find that you are actively working on setting up your online business. But because you have no plan or structure of what you are doing. You maybe be wasting time working on tasks that are either not necessary or could have been done at a later date. Having a detailed list of goals will enable to visualise what step needs to be taken, and when is the best time action them.

Goals Help To Turn Your Vision Into Reality

We all have great ideas, but how do you turn the thought that is in your mind into something that is fully operational? Writing down your ideas will give you more clarity on your vision. Setting goals outlining the processes, costs, and any problems that may occur will give you the structure that you need to get going.

Good Goal Setting Techniques

There are many goal setting techniques out there, that will help you to set up your online business, but I am going to focus on 2 that I believe that are very effective.
Setting Long, Mid-Term, and Short-Term goals is a great way to plan the start of your business and ensure that you stay on track.
For example:
Long-Term Goal: Have an online business, earning 5k a month in 12 month’s time.
Mid -Term Goal: Have 10,000 subscribers
Short Term Goal: Have your website up and running
You can also break your short-term goals into weekly, and daily goals which are good to do at the start of each week, and each day.
Another great goal setting technique is using an acronym called “S.M.A.R.T. Goals”
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Time Frame
Your “specific” goal could be to set up an online business, and the “measure” of success how many subscribers that you have. Is it “achievable”, and I am sure that the answer is yes? Is your goal “realistic”, again the answer will be yes. And your “time frame “is 12 months.


To conclude setting yourself goals, when setting up and online business will save you time and money. Goal setting is a good habit that we all need to adopt not only in business but in our everyday lives
